Temperature in Kyoto
When we visited this July, it was hot. Humid and hot, just like Singapore! Winny said we were lucky it didn't rain during our stay.
(We were in Kyoto previously with our two kids. It was during the first week of November and the temperature was quite cold at 12 to 16 degrees centigrade. For me, that's cold. It also rained during that time.)
What to wear
Summer style in Kyoto is casual and laid-back. I didn't see a lot of short shorts which is quite common here in Singapore. I would recommend skirts, capris and shorts (length according to your age) made of light material. Wear your denims for days when you would be mostly indoor and not walking the streets.
(Traveling during the Fall season? Cold weather clothes look more fashionable by default and the Japanese do dress well. Closed, rainproof shoes would also be a good choice.)
Getting to Kyoto
We traveled to Kansai International Airport from Singapore. After clearing immigration and getting our bags, we went to the JR Ticket office to claim our train tickets for Kyoto.
Winny pre-booked our train ticket online so we didn't have to fill out information in the ticket office. This, however, does not get us "reserved seats". Non-reserved seats board train cars 4 to 6.
We decided to bring our luggage with us in the train and to just send them to our hotel once we got to Kyoto Station.

And that's how we got to Kyoto. There are a lot of websites with very detailed information about transportation and places to see in Kyoto. Tripit.com proved useful to Winny in planning our trip.
